The Meek Will Own the Earth

by Sojourn

Sojourn has a song for the wait.

In a time where it seems as though God is deliberately waiting to respond to the crises in our world, we are left to either draw near or to migrate away from His presence.

Our spiritual ancestors had songs about this tension; between fidelity to God and fear of being destroyed as God’s people. One biblical writer even mourns through song: “How can we sing the LORD’s song on foreign soil?" (Psalm 137:4) This was a fair question since the artist sang from the oppressive state of Babylon—waiting for God to respond.

Today, we can sing a hopeful lament about our only hope in the wait from generation to generation: King Jesus. He promised, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” Because His death secured this reality for all who believe in Him, we can lament and find hope in this promise.

After months of collaboration between musicians, vocalists, and creatives from the Sojourn churches of Louisville, KY, we offer "The Meek Will Own the Earth" as we wait together. This song is for the sick, the tired single parent, the emotionally distressed; the immigrant, and the oppressed by society. In Jesus, we will own the earth in due season.

The harvest that you labored for
The locusts are consuming
The hungry wait at empty stores
The barren fields are burning
& mockers say 'where is your God?'
While your heart is broken
O weary one, where is your song?
Why have you forgotten?

Blessed are the poor
‘Cause heaven’s what they’re worth
And after heaven’s owned
The meek will own the earth

Blessed all who mourn
For you a million Springs
The universe will sing
For you, with all its being

O withered heart, O seat of woe
A wounded soul is sacred
Your Gardener, with seeds, shall sow
The blessings in their places
So hasten on, the tempest comes
The vault of heaven brings a song
So look again, O bruised one
The rains come from your Healer

In the years to come
Teach your children songs
When your King returns
The meek will own the earth
